Since the middle of 20th century, especially following the work of Klaus Mörsdorf, canonist of Munich, a new branch developed in the discipline of church law, which lays down the theological basis of canon law. The present volume does not join any of the branches of this new discipline. In the first section it gives a synthesis of the research done so far, in the second part, it studies certain historical and institutional aspects of the system of canon law. It marks out its special position within the world of sacral legal systems with the help of theological and historical arguments. „Reading this book convinces me that Péter Erdő's achievement is not only the cornerstone of the Hungarian research on canon law, but belongs to the most basic books of international canon law.” (Rinaldo Bertolino)
