Approaches to Hungarian 10.

Volume ten of the series Approaches to Hungarian presents papers from the Seventh International Conference on the Structure of Hungarian (ICSH-7) held on 29-31 May 2005 at the University of Pannonia (Veszprém, Hungary).

The topics discussed include Hungarian case suffixes and postpositions, two traditional categories of marking semantic roles that are argued not to be reliably distinguishable on morphosyntactic grounds; the long-debated issue of whether the syntactic structure of the Hungarian VP is flat or rather hierarchical; the puzzling phenomenon of postverbal stressed quantifiers being able to have wide scope over preverbal operators; the binding properties of the external argument in passive participial constructions; lexical degemination, analysed in terms of a loose CV approach to phonology making use of trochaic government; agreement-marked infinitival constructions, argued to be categorially verbal rather than nominal; the similarities and differences in the voicing of word-initial stops in a range of languages; various patterns of hiatus resolution accounted for in terms of an optimality theoretic framework; mood selection in complement clauses as motivated by the semantic character of the matrix predicate; and an empirical study of variation in vowel harmony based on evidence from online corpora.

The authors of the volume are Anna Asbury (Utrecht), Katalin É. Kiss (Budapest), Beáta Gyuris (Budapest), Scott Jackson (Champaign, Illinois), Tibor Laczkó (Debrecen), Krisztina Polgárdi (Szeged), György Rákosi (Debrecen), Catherine O. Ringen (Iowa City), Péter Siptár (Budapest), Enikő Tóth (Debrecen) and Zara Wanlass (Iowa City).
