The theme of the book is the critical reception of the modernist Irish writer in Hungary in three occasionally overlapping, but at the same time distinct critical approaches: (1) as a phase in bourgeois criticism, approximately between the two world wars, 1926-1947; (2) as a phase in Marxist criticism before and under communism, from 1930s until the middle of the 1980s; (3) since the appearance of an "independent"critical approach, from the 1960s up till now. It tries to answer the following question: which features lead to the fact that Joyce unlike in the Western literary consciousness, has not become a modern classical writer by today in Hungary?
