Topic of my study is the description of the phenomenon of functional illiteracy from the linguistical point of view, getting a more accurate definition of it. Both the Hungarian and English researches use this definition between wide margins, but the substance is the same, they say that functional illiteracy is a type of defect which influences on the individual's literacy competence in a negative way. In my study I try to find the nature, reasons and circumstances of this phenomenon as thoroughly as I can. Also my aim is to get closer to social function of literacy, so that we can understand it. I would like to show some ways of possibilities to prevent and handle functional illiteracy, by using my theoretical and empirical results.
